Oh, no; not another book on the Religious Right. Isn’t the troubled racial history that animated the movement’s rise quite clear? Haven’t we already documented their influence within the Republican Party? Don’t we understand their embrace of Christian Nationalism pretty well? This is a group that garners inordinate attention in our public life, with increasingly little ground in terms of their history, leaders, and influence that’s been left unexplored.
Excellent! We need to understand that what National Socialism was to Germany in the 1930's and the rise of Hitler, White Christian Nationalism is the America now. Americans would be well served to watch the 3 part Ken Burns documentary - America and the Holocaust. No patriotic German in the years leading up to the rise of Hitler and the Nazi movement could imagine what would eventually come out of that. To assert it can't happen in America is to ignore the lessons of history. There is no guarantee our democracy and our constitutional form of government as it now exists will survive WCN.
